Grenada Fun Facts, Or The Art of Saying Nothing

Well hello dear readers, I had planed on writing about the natural Grenada, but it's been a very wet dry session, so my plans fell though so enjoy some fun facts instead.

Grenada is an island country consisting of the island of Grenada and six smaller islands at the southern end of the Grenadines in the southeastern Caribbean Sea.

As of 1 January 2016, the population of Grenada was estimated to be 107,021 people.

Grenada has a total area of 344 square kilometers (133 square miles). The main island is approximately 34 kilometers (21 miles) long by 19 kilometers (12 miles) wide.

Mount Saint Catherine (840 m) is the highest point in Grenada.

There is a lake in Grenada, Grand Etang, which is said to be a bottomless lake because nobody has been able to find its bottom with SONAR. Actually, the lake was formed over a dormant volcano, and it has become a popular tourist attraction.

Grenada is a leading producer of several different spices. Cinnamon, cloves, ginger, mace, allspice, orange/citrus peels, wild coffee used by the locals, and especially nutmeg, providing 20% of the world supply, are all important exports.

On the west coast of Grenada, a short drive north of St. George’s at Moliniere Bay, the Underwater Sculpture Park is a unique submerged gallery that also serves as an artificial reef in a Marine Protected Area. Created by artist Jason de Caires Taylor, the sculptures range from Amerindian petroglyphs to life size figures cast from local children. Divers, snorkelers, and glass bottom boat passengers can admire this underwater exhibition, although the best views are face to face with these sculptures below sea level.

The Grenada dove, which is a critically endangered species, is the national bird of Grenada.

There is a “Jumpers Hill” in Grenada. The hill got its name when the Caribs (earliest inhabitants of Grenada) were chased by the French, who were trying to take control of the island. The Caribs reached the top of the hill and had no way to escape. Ultimately, they jumped off the hill and perished.

That is probable good for today I will try to actually write something next week. TTFN
